Review: Too Tall Houses

Too Tall Houses Too Tall Houses by Gianna Marino
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a fun book with beautiful illustrations. The pictures do tell the story. I read this to a group of three year old toddlers and felt it was comprehended, but this story would work for elementary students well.

Review: Spring Collection

Spring Collection Spring Collection by Judith Krantz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are diverse in personality, motivations, ethics, and it all melds into the glittering world of spring in Paris, Fashion Week before it was a proper noun. A slice of the 1990's, historical fiction for the younger adults of today ;)

A little graphic for my tastes at times, mature themes, but a riveting read with humor and wit, and the workings of several character's minds as the story switches POV.

Review: The Bad Queen: Rules and Instructions for Marie-Antoinette

The Bad Queen: Rules and Instructions for Marie-Antoinette The Bad Queen: Rules and Instructions for Marie-Antoinette by Carolyn Meyer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a great book--the first book I've read by Carolyn Meyer, but definitely not the last! I love her historical detail, and how she brought the characters to life. A thoroughly engaging read, humor, sadness, frustration, you felt all of it with Antonia. Nothing graphic, although sexuality is discussed, a read I would be very comfortable recommending to a mature teen.

You know the ending, but getting there with this fascinating account is a very worthy read.

Review: In the Boss's Castle

In the Boss's Castle In the Boss's Castle by Jessica Gilmore
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I earned this as an ebook as a part of the Harelquin Rewards program. Fun story, I enjoyed the adventures, the settings, and the happy endings. A quick read, too. I love a sweet and quick romance with a happy ending anytime!

Review: Banana

Banana Banana by Ed Vere
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Love! Almost wordless, it's all in how you say something, instead of all you can say...
A hit at story time, and then we played a monkey bean bag game, and yes, the bean bags were banana shaped. A great monkey story that doesn't involve five of them ;)

So I hang out in the forums on the Harlequin pages...

...and they started a new thread in the Fun and Games folder called something like, One Harlequin Leads to Another. We play the game with movie and music titles, but this one is all about Harlequin titles, and so you list one and the next person has to match it with either a Harlequin title with the same word as one of the words in your title (i. e. Forbidden Fire, then Melting Fire) or by the same author.

So then I'm thinking about all the Harlequins I used to read as a teenager. I spent half my childhood in a small town and was an outsider, so the public library was the greatest place in the world for me. And the Harlequin paperbacks were adventures in far away places, the heroine always got her man--except in two of them, and then I would never read those authors again; and, if I lost the book, I knew I had enough babysitting money to pay for it, so it was safe to check out.

This forum brought all that back. The bright spot in what was sometimes a time of loneliness. Thank you, Harlequin!
